OUR SERVICES

Forklift Servicing & Repairs

Forktruck Solutions has built its reputation on keeping other people’s fleets working. We carry out forklift servicing, forklift repairs and statutory inspection across the UK with our own directly employed engineers – not a subcontractor network – on counterbalance trucks, reach trucks, pallet trucks, order pickers and utility vehicles, whoever made them.

Planned maintenance keeps a fleet predictable. Breakdown cover deals with the days it is not. Between the two sits the thing most sites underestimate: a machine that is serviced on the right cycle, inspected when the law requires and repaired properly the first time costs a fraction of one that is patched up until it fails.

What does forklift servicing cover?

A planned forklift service is a scheduled inspection and maintenance visit, carried out on a cycle set by the machine’s running hours and duty. On a typical visit an engineer will work through:

  • Safety-critical systems – brakes, steering, horn, lights, seat belt and seat switch, and the emergency isolator.
  • Lift system – mast, chains and chain tension, forks and fork wear, carriage, hydraulic hoses, rams and fluid levels.
  • Drive and traction – motors, controllers, wheels and tyres, and on engine trucks the oil, filters and belts.
  • Battery and charging – connections, cables, state of health, and on lithium machines the Battery Management System data.
  • Attachments – clamps, rotators, sideshifts and any bolt-on equipment, which are often missed on a general service.

The engineer leaves a report of what was done, what was adjusted and what will need attention before the next visit – so the next repair is a decision you make rather than a surprise you absorb.

If any major repairs or servicing is required, then we will have your forklift trucks transported to a designated manufacturer-approved repair facility, giving you a fixed timeline to when you can expect to have your fleet back.

Our goal is to help you resume business operations as soon as possible – and as such, if your business happens to be anywhere close to one of our designated forklift repair facilities, then we offer an average 2-4 hour response time.

As with our forklift trucks, we have heavily invested in our forklift truck maintenance units and engineers, who go through rigorous and regular training to keep up with all the latest developments when it comes to forklift truck repair and upkeep.

Whether you need general maintenance for the entire fleet, require parts to be replaced or need our team to conduct an urgent inspection should one of your forklifts not perform as intended – we are only a phone call away.

LOLER thorough examination and statutory inspection

This is the part sites most often get wrong, and it is the one with legal consequences.

A forklift is lifting equipment, so it falls under LOLER as well as PUWER. That means a thorough examination at least every 12 months – and at least every 6 months for any machine that lifts people, which includes order pickers and any truck used with a working platform. It is a separate statutory requirement from routine servicing, carried out to a defined scope, and it produces its own report.

A service is not a thorough examination and a thorough examination is not a service. Sites that assume their service contract covers both are often surprised at audit. We carry out both, and can align them so a machine is off the floor once rather than twice.

Attachments have their own intervals too. Chains, forks and lifting accessories all need examination, and fork wear in particular is a common failure point that goes unnoticed until a load is dropped.

Forklift service contracts

Most customers move onto a contract once they have more than a couple of machines, because it converts an unpredictable repair bill into a fixed monthly figure.

Planned maintenance only covers scheduled servicing at a set interval, with repairs charged as they arise. It suits lightly used fleets in good condition.

Full maintenance covers servicing, breakdown labour, parts and statutory inspection under one agreement. It is the option that makes budgeting genuinely predictable, and the one most multi-shift sites end up on.

Contracts can cover a mixed fleet regardless of manufacturer, and can be combined with fleet telematics so servicing is scheduled on actual running hours rather than a fixed calendar. If you are hiring rather than buying, servicing is normally included in the hire or contract hire rate.

How quickly can we get to you?

We dispatch an engineer to your premises within 24 hours of a breakdown call, and sites close to one of our designated repair facilities typically see an average 2 to 4 hour response.

The engineer surveys the fault, quotes the work and then fixes it on site wherever possible – the majority of forklift repairs are resolved at the first visit. Where a major repair is needed, the truck goes to a manufacturer-approved facility and you get a fixed timeline for its return rather than an open-ended wait.

Our engineers are directly employed and retrained regularly, and they carry the common wear parts, so a straightforward job does not turn into a second visit for the sake of a seal or a sensor.

Fork truck repairs for every make

We are not limited to the machines we sell. Our forklift services cover mixed fleets across manufacturers, which matters because most sites have accumulated equipment from three or four brands over the years and do not want three or four service agreements to go with them.

That covers counterbalance forklifts, reach trucks, pallet trucks and stackers, order pickers, Combilift and utility vehicles – new, used and hired.

Genuine and equivalent parts are available for most makes, and we will tell you honestly when a machine has reached the point where further repair is worse value than replacement. See our forklift trucks.

Forklift servicing FAQs

Most forklifts are serviced every 250 to 500 running hours, or roughly every three to six months on typical single-shift use. The right interval depends on hours, duty and environment rather than the calendar alone: a truck in a cold store or a foundry needs attention more often than one doing light indoor work. Where telematics is fitted, servicing can be scheduled on actual running hours per machine instead of a fixed cycle.

A planned service covers safety-critical systems (brakes, steering, horn, lights, seat belt and seat switch, emergency isolator), the lift system (mast, chains and tension, forks and fork wear, carriage, hydraulics), drive and traction components, battery and charging including Battery Management System data on lithium machines, and any attachments. The engineer leaves a report of what was done and what will need attention before the next visit.

A service is preventative maintenance to keep the truck running well. A LOLER thorough examination is a separate statutory inspection of the lifting equipment, carried out to a defined scope and producing its own report. One does not cover the other. Sites that assume their service contract includes thorough examination are often caught out at audit, so it is worth checking exactly what your agreement covers.

At least every 12 months for a standard forklift, and at least every 6 months for any machine that lifts people – which includes order pickers and any truck used with a working platform. More frequent examination may be required where the duty cycle is heavy or where a written scheme of examination specifies it.

We dispatch an engineer to your premises within 24 hours of a breakdown call. Sites close to one of our designated repair facilities typically see an average 2 to 4 hour response. The engineer surveys the fault, quotes the work and repairs on site wherever possible; most forklift repairs are resolved at the first visit.

Yes. Our forklift services cover mixed fleets across manufacturers, including counterbalance trucks, reach trucks, pallet trucks and stackers, order pickers, Combilift and utility vehicles, whether new, used or hired. Most sites have accumulated equipment from several brands and do not want a separate service agreement for each one.

There are two common levels. Planned maintenance only covers scheduled servicing at a set interval, with repairs charged as they arise. Full maintenance covers servicing, breakdown labour, parts and statutory inspection under one agreement, which makes budgeting predictable. Both can cover a mixed fleet regardless of manufacturer.

It depends on the machine type, the hours it runs, how many trucks are on the agreement and whether you want parts and breakdown labour included. Rather than quote a figure that would not apply to your fleet, we survey what you run and how hard you run it, then price a contract against it. Fleets of several machines on full maintenance usually pay less per truck than single machines on ad-hoc repair.

Yes. Planned maintenance is booked to suit your operation, including outside normal hours where a machine cannot be released during production. Where a truck needs a major repair off site, we give a fixed timeline for its return rather than an open-ended wait, and can discuss a hire machine to cover the gap.

Yes. Genuine and equivalent parts are available for most makes, and our engineers carry common wear items so a straightforward job does not become a second visit for the sake of a seal or a sensor. Parts can be supplied on their own if you have an in-house engineer.

When the cost of keeping it running over the next 12 months approaches the cost of replacing or hiring, or when wear on safety-critical components such as forks, chains or the mast means it cannot be brought back to a safe standard economically. We will tell you when a machine has reached that point rather than keep charging for repairs on it.
